Diagnosis:
Because internists are broadly trained, they are often seen first for symptoms that require diagnosis. For example, chest pain may be caused by cardiac disease but is often caused by stomach or esophageal conditions, muscular problems, stress or even infections. Therefore, a good place to start diagnosis is with an internist who has a broad perspective and an open mindset. Internists often can get to the root of the problem without exhausting every diagnostic test in a particular subspecialty.
